Including an enclosure with a Business Letter

Are you including a check, resume, brochure, or price list with your business letter? Anytime you include another document with your letter, there are a few things you should do to make sure that the attachment is noticed and understood.

First, mention the attachment in the body of the letter. If you fail to mention that you've included the extra items in your letter, they may be overlooked by the recipient. If you are including a resume with a cover letter, for example, mention that you've attached a resume for their review. If you are including a check for a late payment, mention that the check is enclosed.

This also applies for emails. Letting someone know what you are attaching to the email helps him or her discern between SPAM and attachments that are safe to open. Also, it brings the recipient's attention to the attachment.

The second thing you'll want to do in your letter is use 'Enc:' or 'Enclosure:' at the bottom of your letter - after the signature line. For example, the end of your letter might look like this:

Sincerely,

Jane Doe

Enc: Price List
